Do You Need Supplements for Homemade Dog Food?

Ninety-five percent. That’s roughly the share of home-cooked dog food recipes that a widely cited UC Davis analysis found short on at least one essential nutrient, and more than 80 percent were short on several — calcium, vitamin D, iodine, zinc, copper, and choline came up again and again. I lead with that number because it reorders the whole question. Owners ask me whether their dog “needs a supplement” as if the answer hinges on brand loyalty or trend-chasing. It doesn’t. It hinges on arithmetic most kitchens can’t do on their own.

Quick-check before you cook another batch:

  • Is your recipe formulated (not just “inspired”) by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist or a validated tool, with calcium and the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio explicitly balanced?
  • Does it include a bone source, a calcium supplement, or a commercial vitamin-mineral pre-mix — not just muscle meat and a vegetable?
  • Have you weighed the finished recipe and confirmed calories match your dog’s actual body weight, not a generic serving size?
  • Are you following the recipe exactly, without swapping proteins or dropping the “boring” mineral packet?
  • If your dog has a diagnosed condition — pancreatic insufficiency, kidney disease, a GI disorder — has a nutritionist adjusted the recipe for that, rather than a general template?

I’ll expand on each of those, but the short version is this: homemade feeding isn’t inherently risky, undersupplemented homemade feeding is.

The muscle-meat trap

Most people who cook for their dogs default to what reads as “healthy” to a human eye — chicken breast, ground beef, sweet potato, green beans. It looks like a balanced plate. It is not a balanced canine diet. Muscle meat is heavy in phosphorus and essentially empty of calcium, and without a bone source or a calcium supplement, that imbalance compounds meal after meal. A woman I’ll call the owner of a 4-year-old, 62-pound Labrador mix came to me eight weeks after switching her dog fully to a home-cooked ground-turkey-and-rice diet she’d found online. There’s a related failure mode worth naming directly: owners who do add a calcium supplement, feel reassured, and then start substituting ingredients — swapping beef for the venison that was on sale, dropping the liver because their dog didn’t like it — without recalculating anything. A recipe is a formula, not a suggestion; changing one line changes the whole equation, sometimes back into deficiency even with the supplement still in the bowl.

An edge case that changes the calculus

Here’s the scenario that actually shifts my recommendation: a 9-year-old, 18-pound terrier mix with early kidney values on bloodwork, whose owner wanted to move him to home-cooked food for perceived freshness and ingredient control. So, do you need supplements for homemade dog food? For nearly every home-cooked recipe I’ve reviewed that wasn’t formulated by a nutritionist or generated through a validated tool, yes — at minimum a calcium source and, usually, a broader mineral and vitamin pre-mix. I’d rather see an owner start with a nutritionist-formulated recipe that has the math built in than add supplements piecemeal to a recipe that was never balanced to begin with. If you’re already using a formulated recipe with an appropriate pre-mix, additional digestive supplements are optional, not corrective — worth considering for stool quality, not worth relying on to fix a nutrient gap. What would actually resolve this for the average kitchen cook: a cheap, accessible way to verify a home recipe’s mineral content before it’s fed for six months straight. We don’t have that yet, at scale, for most owners. Until we do, the safest default is to treat the recipe itself, not the supplement aisle, as the first thing worth getting right.
