Is Raw Feeding Safe for Your Dog's Gut Health?

Medically reviewed by , DVM, CVA, ACVN, ACVSMR — For general education — not a substitute for veterinary care.

Raw feeding may change stool and microbes, but safety for a dog's gut depends on handling, balance, and health.

Check the bowl first, then decide about raw. Weigh handling risk, nutritional balance, and your dog’s health before you switch.

Start with food safety. Raw meat-based diets carry a higher load of Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, and E. coli than cooked commercial diets. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that raw pet food can harbor harmful bacteria that spread from food to dog to household surfaces, even when the dog looks well. That matters for gut safety because shedding continues in stool for days.

The American Veterinary Medical Association discourages feeding raw or undercooked animal-source protein without safeguards, citing risks to pets and people from pathogens and nutritional imbalance.

What raw actually changes in the gut

Feed raw and you change substrates. High meat, high fat, low fiber, and bone shift what reaches the colon. Protein fermentation rises. Fiber fermentation falls. Stool often gets smaller and firmer, which owners read as better digestion.

Do not mistake small stool for a healthier microbiome. Reviews of raw meat-based diets summarized in Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association: Current knowledge about the risks and benefits of raw meat-based diets for dogs and cats find higher pathogen contamination, potential nutrient excesses and deficiencies, and limited evidence for consistent health benefits. Diversity alone does not tell you if the shift supports normal stool, immunity, and skin.

Feed a complete formula or balance the ration. Many home raw mixes run low in calcium, zinc, iodine, vitamin D, and fiber, and high in fat and vitamin A. Weigh what a supplement can realistically do for diet, mobility, and recovery: a probiotic or fish oil may help support normal digestion and stool quality within a balanced diet, but it cannot fix an unbalanced raw ration.

Handle raw like raw

Buy commercial raw that uses high-pressure processing or test-and-hold screening when you use raw. Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Wash hands, bowls, cutting boards, and counters with hot soapy water after each meal. Pick up stool promptly and wash hands after. Discard uneaten raw after 30 minutes at room temperature.

Keep raw away from high-risk households. Vets often see the tradeoff turn in homes with toddlers, older adults, pregnant people, or immunocompromised people or pets. In practice, Laurie in Concord weighed raw for Rummy, her 4-year-old Goldendoodle, after two weeks of soft evening stools. The deciding detail was kitchen traffic: three kids under 8 sharing cleanup duty made strict handling hard to sustain, so she paused the switch.

When raw is the wrong call

Skip home raw for puppies in rapid growth, dogs with chronic kidney disease, pancreatitis, or prior foreign-body obstruction, and any dog on chemotherapy or high-dose immunosuppressants. Bone fragments raise obstruction and tooth-fracture risk. High fat can trigger vomiting, abdominal pain, and loose stool in fat-sensitive dogs.

Know when to stop and call your veterinarian: bloody diarrhea, repeated vomiting, fever, lethargy, refusal to drink for more than 12 hours, or suspected bone ingestion.

This is the boundary of nutrition counseling. Diet form influences stool and microbes, but persistent dysbiosis often has a medical driver that food alone does not resolve.

What I recommend instead

Choose a cooked complete and balanced diet that lists an AAFCO statement for your dog’s life stage. Then support the gut directly. Add fiber gradually, keep fat moderate, and track stool for 14 days.

My position holds for most healthy adult dogs: do not feed conventional home raw as the base diet.

If safe handling, complete formulation, and household risk all check out, and you accept the pathogen tradeoff, a commercial complete raw used short-term with veterinary oversight is the narrow exception.

Frequently asked questions

Does raw feeding improve gut bacteria diversity in dogs?

Raw diets often shift bacterial groups because protein, fat, and fiber change, but a shift is not proof of better gut function. Pathogen risk and balance matter more than diversity alone.

Is commercial raw safer than homemade raw for the gut?

Commercial products with complete formulation and pathogen controls reduce but do not remove risk. Homemade mixes more often miss calcium, trace minerals, vitamins, and fiber.
